Crystal Lee Lane, a talented California artist, creates sculptural ceramics and “Gnomey Homes” inspired by coastal redwood forests and the aesthetic spirit of magical loose wilderness first encountered in the work of Brian Froud. Drawing in part on the example of “Daddy” Josiah Wedgwood—whose studio united technical innovation with cultural influence through works such as the Portland Vase and the abolitionist medallion Am I Not a Man and a Brother—she approaches her unique art of ceramics as both object and environment, allowing elemental firing processes to complete each structure unpredictably.
Lane’s long-term goal is to serve as a bridge within and between artistic communities, supporting the exchange of knowledge, strengthening craft proficiency, and helping preserve technical traditions for future makers, including her distinctive Squibbykins ceramics.
